My view is that the operating theatre utilisation should be expressed as contact hours - anaesthesia start time to the time the patient leaves the operating theatre. I am honored. You may also be interested in my personal blog GettingChangeRight.com.

I love your questions! You write you are pondering "...how easy it is to describe what has happened and to make inferences from that as to how we can make something happen in the future."

Thank you for this. It opens a door into a frame-of-mind that is immensely constructive. Indeed, where do our mental models transfer from recollections of an experience to a framework that works as an application? This is so difficult. Yet, so needed to boil everything down to a set of workable principles.

How can we possibly capture all circumstances in a mental model? Yet, all we need is enough to promise the results we are after. This is the nature of the human mind, to build generalizations in the hopes of being able to control our own destiny in some limited way. As a practitioner (not a researcher or academic), I am always on the lookout for models that work, that I can adopt, adapt, and put to work.

I see that you are involved with nurses and healthcare. Are you familiar with the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Magnet hospital program? I have been very impressed by the "Fourteen Forces of Magnetism as a way of predictably transforming hospitals, beginning with nursing excellence and extending through the whole system.

What I know about this program is that these principles are useful in starting interactions, and setting clear expectations about what is involved in transforming a hospital. If someone is an influencer - truly - then by definition they are important. Where much confusion enters is when it is asserted than an individual is influential. Rarely is an objective case for influence, and instead arbitrary criteria are used: seniority, awareness or (worst) celebrity.

I think that Prof Watts draws attention to the over-use of the term "influencer", which is no bad thing. But there is danger in throwing out the whole concept.

I've sen the power of tapping true influencers, and it enhances sales and marketing dramatically. But it does need to be done with care and attention.

I'll post more on this issue shortly - thanks for reminding me!

I am following this up in my lunch hour (on my own...

I am following this up in my lunch hour (on my own in front of a computer screen......oh dear!). Or indeed is there a way of creating a mood os circumstances which would create a mass of easily influenced individuals. Your reference to personality ty...

Sarah,

Great post! Your reference to personality type or personal preference is very helpful. I worked with the MBTI, as well as other behavior based instruments in the past.

People generally do interpret information or more easily adopt a change initiative based on the way it was delivered. Marshall McLuhan (Canadian author) once said: "the medium is the message".

When the communication delivery (same message) is structured to each personality type, it greatly enhances adoption.

However, there are some challenges: It is hard to find out individuals personality type to gain a general profile of a team or organization. When asking individuals to complete a MBTI questionnaire, it is normally for developmental purposes and could not be used for any other purpose.

On the other hand, experienced consultants / industrial psychologists can easily diagnose individuals personality types or personal preferences simply by observation.

Once diagnosed, a message can be written or communicated in multiple ways so that it resonates strongly with each personality type.

Regards,

Malcolm Gabriel

Here are several dozen examples of social network ...

Here are several dozen examples of social network analysis in organizations, communities and industries.

Good tips

Good tips
